Gold Coins vs. Sweeps Coins: The Difference Every Player Should Understand
Two currencies, two very different purposes. A plain-language guide to how each coin type works on sweepstakes platforms.
Why there are two currencies at all
Sweepstakes casinos operate under promotional sweepstakes law rather than a state gambling licence. That legal structure is the entire reason for the split. One currency exists purely for entertainment, and a second, separate currency carries the promotional entries that can lead to a prize. Confusing the two is the most common mistake new players make.
The standard currency
Gold Coins, or whatever a given brand calls them, are the standard play currency. You get them free at signup, top them up through daily logins, and you can buy more in coin packages. What you cannot do is turn them into anything. They have no monetary value and can never be redeemed. When you buy a package you are buying entertainment, and nothing else.
If a platform ever suggests its standard currency can be cashed out, that is a red flag. Close the tab.
The promotional currency
Sweeps Coins are the promotional currency. They arrive as a bonus alongside purchases, through daily rewards, referrals, social giveaways, or a mail-in request, which is the free entry method that keeps the model lawful. Play them and eligible winnings can be redeemed once you clear the operator's minimum.
The names change, the structure does not
Brand names vary across our table and the inconsistency trips people up. WOW Vegas calls its standard currency WOW Coins. Crown Coins uses Crown Coins. Stake.us calls its promotional currency Stake Cash, and Fortune Wins calls its own Fortune Coins. High 5 adds a third currency, Diamonds, purely as a loyalty layer. In every case the structure is identical: one balance is play-only, one can be redeemed.
Redemption thresholds differ more than people expect
This is where platforms genuinely diverge, and it rarely appears in the marketing. Sportzino and WOW Vegas use a 50 SC minimum. Chumba and Pulsz ask for 100 SC. On a 100 SC platform you need roughly twice as long to reach a first redemption, which matters far more to your experience than the size of the welcome package.
Before you request a redemption
- Promotional coins usually need one playthrough before becoming redeemable.
- Identity and geolocation verification is required and takes longer the first time.
- Minimum thresholds and daily caps vary by operator.
- Bonus promotional coins sometimes carry different terms than purchased ones.
The short version
The standard currency is for fun. The promotional currency is the one that can become a prize. Check which balance is selected before you spin, because nearly every platform puts that toggle at the top of the lobby and nearly every new player misses it at least once.
